Hints and tips
The most successful, long-running groups seem to follow roughly the same guidelines.
-
Take turns choosing the book. Start alphabetically for instance to make sure everyone participates.
-
The meeting takes place at the house of the person who chooses the current book.
-
The choice of book is accepted without question (unless a majority have already read it recently), but the chooser might want to have a first and second option in mind if they are uncertain.
-
Take a majority decision on the date of the meeting, because you may find you cannot reach a complete consensus. Better still, make a regular date like the last thursday of every month.
-
Encourage people to come along even if they haven't finished (or even started) the book, so they do not drop out. Sometimes there just isn't time in a given month.
-
Allocate some time for chatting and catching up, then do discuss the book - the chooser can start and lead the discussion.
-
Some wine and some nibbles helps for a convivial atmosphere and encourages a full and frank discussion. Do not take any criticism of your choice personally - differing opinions make for a more interesting evening.
-
Be brave in your choices and enjoy all your reading!
